Ready for Medicare? Some things to think about . . .
Medicare coverage is great--but to get the most out of it, you need to make the right choices! And it's not as simple as you might think. Here are a few Medicare questions you may want
to consider:
1. You may still have employer-provided health insurance, even though you are eligible for Medicare. Which approach to coverage best suits your needs? To make that decision, you need to compare the types of services covered under each scenario, as well as how much each would cost overall.
2. Medicare alone may meet your individual needs, but it may not. If you depend on Medicare, you will be responsible for 20% of any health care expenses you incur. That may not be a lot when it comes to ordinary care, such as doctor visits and simple procedures. But if you have a major illness or injury, the costs can add up to a lot. That’s where Medicare supplements come in. A Medicare supplement is an insurance policy that will pay your share of health care costs. Do you need a supplement policy? If so, you will have to assess the various levels of coverage, and decide which one would be the best fit for your personal situation.
3. You may have heard a lot about Medicare Advantage plans--which are not the same as Medicare supplements. Advantage plans coordinate your medical claims and manage your pharmacy benefits, but they don’t provide any additional coverage. You can't have both an Advantage plan and a supplement policy, so it's important to understand what you will and won’t get from each of these options. Would an Advantage plan suit your personal needs? If so, you will need to evaluate the different products offered by different providers.
4. In order to serve millions of Americans efficiently, the Medicare program has to run on a system. That means there are times when you can do certain things, and times when you can’t. Do you know your options and limitations under Medicare? If not—it’s important to find out!
The government does a good job of making information about Medicare available to citizens. But there are many aspects of the program that are not easy to figure out. And since your needs are unique, it can be a big help to have expert advice on the best Medicare approach.
